There have been recent issues with regards to IUU fishing in Thailand or also known as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The government was quick to take action on the problem therefore the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization lauded the progress they have been making. During a closed discussion in a ห้องประชุม in Rome, the representative of Thailand, Jose Graziano Da Silva, said that the nation became a part of the Port State Measures Agreement. PSMA was the first global agreement made in order to fight the widespread IUU fishing practice.
This month the country’s Department of Fisheries will send a representative to participate in the meeting organized by the Committee on Fisheries which is going to be held at the headquarters of FAO in Rome. The meeting which is going to be attended by member countries of FAO will discuss the progress of the department in terms of fighting issues related to IUU.
Last month during the Global Soil Partnership Meeting, Da Silva was able to meet with permanent representative of Thailand to the UN, ThanawatTiensin, assistant permanent secretary, RapibhatChandarasrivongs, ministry of agriculture and cooperatives’ permanent secretary, LertvirojKowattana.
Da Silva revealed that FAO is happy to be able to take part in the World Soil Day Award which is held in Thailand yearly on December 5. He said that a selected committee is going to be chosen based on the guidelines of the United Nations to make sure that the Award winners will be selected fairly. The event is organized every year in order to emphasize how important it is to have healthy solid and to encourage concerned organizations to promote the use of sustainable material in managing their soil resources.
During a discussion at the FAO Conference in June of 2013, they have decided inside the ห้องประชุม that World Soil Day should be adopted for the General Assembly of the United Nation therefore on that same year the first event on December 5 was hosted in Thailand. The date was chosen because it is the same day as the late King’s birthday.
