Bangkok’s Recent Restaurant Openings

Bangkok is a tourist destination renowned the world over for its many attractions, as well as its eateries, all of which cater to a wide range of travellers, from simple backpackers to those with some deep pockets. With tourism in the country still on the rise, new eateries are opening in the country, from rooftop dining in Sukhumvit to simple fast food, to meet demand, and here’s some of them.

The Bar Upstairs, Soi Sukhumvit 11

A recent opening for travellers with a taste for fine wine and faux rooftop dining in Sukhumvit with fairly large budgets, the Bar Upstairs opened on the June 1, 2018. Designed to resemble an abandoned French garden, this bar is fittingly located on the third floor of the 30s Parisian restaurant, the Brasserie Cordonnier. The bar opens for one hour every week, on Tuesdays, from 6pm to 7pm, and offers fine European wine, like the Prosecco, a fizzy Italian white wine that’s touted for humid climes.

The bar’s Managing Director is Rohit Sachdev, from the Soho Hospitality Group, the firm behind the Havana Social and Above Eleven, the former a pre-revolution Cuban bar, the latter a rooftop bar and restaurant combined into one.

Carl’s Jr, Soi Sukhumvit 22

Parent company CKE Restaurants Holdings recently opened the fifth Carl’s Jr branch in Bangkok, on Sukhumvit Soi 22 for younger travellers with a taste for American-style fast food.  From the Western Bacon Cheeseburger to the Hand-Breaded Chicken Drumsticks, there are plenty of options here for those looking to enjoy char-grilled burgers made from 100% beef around the clock. Managed by R&R Restaurants Group, this branch is the brand’s first foray into the famous Sukhumvit district and is open around the clock, daily.

CaliMex Bar & Grill, Soi Sukhumvit 22

A taqueria, a casual Mexican bar and restaurant, featuring California-style aesthetics, founded by an American, and based in Hong Kong, CaliMex Bar & Grill is something else. Featuring its own iterations on classic Mexican foods like Burritos and Quesadillas, the restaurant uses handpicked ingredients flown in fresh every day, with new specials from its branded ‘CaliMex Food Lab’. This branch on Soi Sukhumvit 22 is the restaurant’s first branch in Bangkok, with 19 other locations in Hong Kong.
